The ETUC gathered earlier today trade union activists and civil society representatives for a protest against the European Commission’s omnibus package. Isabelle Schömann, Deputy General Secretary at the ETUC, pointed out that the omnibus legislation is nothing less than deregulation. What is at stake here is the protection of workers, human rights throughout the supply chain, and the protection of the environment. “If you want to be competitive in the European union, you have to have good working conditions for workers, in and outside the supply chain”, Schömann said.

Markku Saikkonen Palvelualojen ammattiliitosta osallistui lokakuun alussa Uni Europan ja EFFATin järjestämään mielenosoitukseen, joka vaati EU:n julkisten hankintojen direktiivin edistyksellistä uudistusta. Saikkonen oli tullut Brysseliin osoittamaan tukensa ay-eurooppalaisille kollegoilleen. ”Raha ei saa hankinnoissa ratkaista, vaan laadullakin on merkitystä. Vaadimme, kuten tuhannet muut paikalla olevat työntekijät, että noudatetaan työehtosopimuksia julkisissa hankinnoissa”, hän kommentoi mielenosoituksessa. Europe Day held on 9 May every year celebrates peace and unity in Europe. Europe Day is also an opportunity for us to talk about the upcoming European elections and the importance of voting. Elspeth Hathaway, a Senior Policy Advisor for IndustriAll Europe, talks about just transition on this video: “EU need to continue the important work on climate policy and carbon neutrality by 2050. That is why I am voting in the European elections this June”, she emphasizes in the video. Use your vote too!

På Europadagen, som är den 9 maj varje år, firar vi fred och sammanhållning i Europa. Det är årsdagen av den historiska Schumandeklarationen, som betraktas i dag som startskottet för EU. Europadagen är också en möjlighet för oss att diskutera om EU-valet i juni 2024. Matilda Nyström, praktikant på Brysselkontoret, betonar vikten med att rösta som ung EU-invånare. ”Genom att rösta kan du göra en förändring och påverka framtiden”, säger hon. ”EU:s framtid bör byggas på sociala framsteg och inte på lägre standarder. Därför kommer jag att rösta i EU-valet”, berättar hon.
